It's as simple as using a Tape Measure

September 30, 2009

Metrics.  Great buzz word; extremely critical in all aspects of business – technology, finance, operations, etc; but seldom understood and properly implemented.

I recently came across a few posts discussing the use of Metrics within IT.  One was from Steve Romero, self proclaimed IT Governance Evangelist, and one from CIOInsight.  One point made by Steve that spoke to my heart was:

“Which is why I continue to insist if you are collecting data and you don’t know exactly what decision is associated with the data, stop collecting the data. It is a waste of time.”

This is yet another example of IT projects that don’t necessarily “fail” in that they are completed.  However, assuming anyone actually does a post-implementation review, you would find that it missed the mark on the original objectives, and really didn’t produce the results that were intended.  So many times I’ve seen companies who generate forest-loads of reports, because “that’s what we do every week” but are never looked at.

Metrics can make the difference between a company strategically managed – with someone constantly at the helm making targeted and appropriate course adjustments, versus a company who looks at their quarterly financial statements and tries to figure out what went wrong after the fact.

Technology is one of the tools that can tie the information together, and make the information “useable”.  That said, understanding the business requirements driving the metrics – whether the metrics are focused on Operations, Finance, or IT, takes a whole other mind set.

There must be a way to search Google + to see the acutal individuals that have +1ed you? I can’t seem to find those results anywhere. Also the +1 metrics need more than 233 +1s to see Audience data Hmm..Good post btw
