The Passing of A Legend – Nuggets from his life

June 7, 2010

Whether you are a fan of basketball or not, you have probably at one time or another heard of John Wooden.  The world lost a great leader when Coach Wooden passed away last Friday, June 4th.  I am truly amazed at the wisdom this man shared with so many people throughout his life.  Anyone who had the honor of knowing this man, I am sure was truly blessed.  If you have never had the opportunity to see his Pyramid of Success, I would HIGHLY recommend you check it out by clicking on the image below.  A downloadable pdf version can be found on his website:  www.coachwooden.com

For this weeks post, I thought it woul be fitting to share a few of his quotes that have touched me and if put into practice can help you become not only a better businessperson, but also a better person.  Many of these can be found in his Pyramid of Success.

Quotes From Coach John Wooden – may he rest in peace:

  • Make each day your Masterpiece.
  • Perform at your best when your best is required.  Your best is required each day.
  • Ability may get you to the top, but character keeps you there – mental, moral, and physical.
  • Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.
  • What you’ve learned after you’ve learned it all counts most of all.
  • Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do the best of which you are capable.
  • Whether in basketball or business you must be able to perform all aspects of your job, not just part of it.  You must be able to “get open” and “shoot”.  One without the other makes you a partial performer, someone who can be replaced because your skills are incomplete.

Thanks Coach Wooden ~ Your legacy has touched more lives than you can possibly imagine.
