Links, links, & more links

July 13, 2010

I can’t even tell you how many times I get asked about search engine optimization (SEO).  Anyone who has a website wants to increase their search engine rank.  After all most people never even leave the first page of results when searching on the internet.  So how do you do it?  How can you get your site onto that elusive first page of search results?

Well, I am not going to go into all the ways to improve your ranking but I am going to highlight one of the most important ones (and one that is often overlooked).

Inbound linking!

That’s right, not meta tags, not content, but inbound linking.  In other words other websites that link back to your site. I cannot stress how much this helps.  Google became the power house they are today because they designed their search engine to weight incoming links higher than meta tags or site content.  This method of ranking worked so well that other major search engines have followed their example.

Look at it this way.  Inbound links make your site easier to find for the search engines.  It also makes your site appear more relevant to the search engines.  Both of which will help to move your site up in the ranks.

Great!  So now that you know you need to get other websites to like to you what do you do about it?

Here are few things you can do that will help get you links:

  1. Get your clients and business partners to link to you.
  2. Join the Join Better Business Bureau and local chamber of commerce.
  3. Start a blog and post regularly.  Let your friends, clients, and other bloggers know it is out there (the blogging community loves to link back to each other).
  4. Syndicate your posts to sites like GoArticles and EzineArticles
  5. Share useful information.  Whether it is part of your sites general content or on your blog make sure that what you are putting out there is useful.  This is after all what links are used for.  Think about including how to guides or lists.  People like to Digg or link back to list.
  6. Post messages on related forms, message boards, blog comments.  But make sure you are adding something useful to the thread.

Remember when using any of the above tips be sensible.  Make sure that anything you post is relevant and valuable. Don’t spam forms or blogs with your comments.  And whatever you do, don’t join a link farm

SEO is a long term investment so be patient and it will pay off.
