Smart Phones – Is there a new player in town?

October 11, 2010

You may of heard that next month Microsoft is releasing its latest operating system for phones and other mobile devices.  I have never really been that excited about a mobile platform from Microsoft before.  In the past they seem to be nothing more than a light version of their desktop OS.  This has lead, in my opinion, to a less than satisfying mobile experience.

With Windows Phone 7 Microsoft has finally moved into the mobile market using, dare I say it, the same approach Apple took with the iPhone.  They are marketing devices with the new OS as more than just smart phones.  They are focusing on the users experience and functionality.  Declaring it “a very different kind of phone” that aims to “bring together the things that you love.”

To me it looks like they are trying to combine the best of the iPhone and the Droid by combining all the different services the already offer.  With out of the box integration to Office, bing, Xbox live, instant messenger, a streaming media service, and more.  They hope to not only attract the average consumer but the on-the-go professional as well.

Will it work?  Will Microsoft be able to break into the mobile market and become a serious contender?  Only time will tell.  But I for one am excited to see how it all plays out.
