Success – what’s the price tag?

October 18, 2010

“No one ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him; it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above the required that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction.” ~ Charles Kendall Adams

These words of the late 19th century educator ring true today in business as well as life in general.  In a society where “me” has overtaken “we” as the primary concern of individuals, it seems rare to find a person who is willing to go the extra mile.  People often speak of wanting to be more successful, to make more money, to find greater happiness, to lose more weight, etc., but what are they truly doing to bring about such change?  Usually, not much.  You often hear people talking about how something is “not their responsibility” or “they’ve done everything possible”, but is this really true?  What could we be doing as individuals to affect positive change in our personal lives, business, and ultimately our communities?  Here are just a few thoughts:

  • Stop accepting “The Status Quo”
  • Accept no less than your very best, and the very best from those you work with.
  • Focus on Results – be objective driven.
  • Start by going after the “low-hanging fruit” – it helps you accomplish many items on your list
  • Take inventory of the tools available to you.  If you don’t have the right “tool for the job”, what do you need to obtain it?
  • Tools you must use:  Discipline, Sacrifice, Motivation and Commitment
  • You will most likely be required to sacrifice personal time and interests in order to focus on your goal

Will it be easy to achieve your desires?  Probably not.  Will it be worth it?  Probably.

Do good today – give more than what is required!
