Feeling Stressed? Work Overwhelming You?

January 24, 2011

Many times in your life you will be asked to take on a project or be asked to help someone out with something they are working on. These requests oftentimes seem to come when your plate is so full you can’t possibly figure out how to make even one more task fit in, let alone help someone else. This tends to lead to the feeling of being overwhelmed. So, this week, my blog is going to be a little self-help (or maybe I should say selfish) entry, because even getting this post done seemed to be that “one more thing” that I have to figure out how to fit in.

Below is a summarized list of things that you can do when feeling overwhelmed that I found on

  • 1st – Focus on the things you can control
    • Stop worrying about the things that you have no control over – this wastes so much time and energy that you could be using to get your project started if not completed.
    • Though you may be able to have some impact on these things, they cannot and should not be your #1 priority
  • 2nd – Break it down into bite sized tasks
    • Don’t be paralyzed by a daunting task.  Many people get so overwhelmed thinking about everything that they do nothing.
    • Ask yourself, what do you need to do first that will enable you to move on to the next task?
  •  Finally – Get started
    • “There comes a time when you just have to roll up your sleeves and start working”
    • Stop procrastinating
    • You’ll find that once you start completing some of those “bite-sized” tasks, the momentum will build and you will find it easier to keep going and soon that “mountain” starts to resemble something more like a “mole-hill”

So, with that being said, my first bite-sized task is now completed. On to the next one…

I’ll be blogging again soon, so until then – get started. It feels great!

Great points Pam! Love the “bite size pieces” philosophy.

Thanks Kathy! I’ve actually been putting it into practice this week and it’s been great! I’ve always enjoyed being able to cross things off the list, even if they are just the little things. Hope you have an awesome year!
