The Power of Social Media!

May 3, 2011

I must be honest with you all.  This is not the article I had planned on posting.  I had planned on posting another security related article but something happened this past weekend that caused me to scrap my original post.  As I am sure you have heard by now Osama Bin Laden was killed on Sunday May 1st.  Now I am not going to talk about his death but rather how the news of his death spread.  By the time The President made the official announcement most people already knew what he was going to announce. What I find interesting is that the news was first leaked on twitter and what is even more interesting is that it was leaked by a credible source.  Twitter reported that it reached more than 4,000 tweets per second before and after The President’s speech.

So what does all of this mean?  Why should we care about this?  Does this make twitter (or other social media sites) the next media outlet?  No it doesn’t but it is a prime example of the power that social media has.  It only takes one person to post something for news to spread faster than though any other medium.  When used and leveraged properly sites like twitter can drive people to you website, increase web searches for your company, and spread your name, services, and product to new customers while keeping your current customers in the loop.  The trick of course is how can you successfully leverage the power of social media?  Well, here are a few quick tips for you:

  • Be social – Not only post often but interact with others.
  • Know your company – If you are speaking on behalf of your company make sure keep that in mind.
  • Content – Not only do you need to post often but your posts need to be interesting.
  • Trust your customers – Let your customers interact with you.
  • Seek help – Some companies, like SNQ, are experts in growing business presence in social media.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Now I realize that this is a short list but hopefully it will get you thinking about how you can leverage the power of social media in your business.
