Doing what you love…

September 5, 2012

Since my mid-twenties, I’ve more than once heard the comment (or complaint!) that I’m good at many things.  So seriously not!  I do, however, tend to do things I like.  A lot.  And when you do things that you like, or better yet, are passionate about, you’re motivated to get good at them.  Let’s face it, it’s a lot more fun to do things you are good at. Sucking at things, just, well, sucks.  Personally, I try to avoid things that suck.

So when you find something that you can be passionate about, or even just need to be good at professionally, work at it.  Put the time in to get at a minimum good, although preferably excellent, at that skill.  And continually reassess – are you at the level you need to be at?  Are you good enough to excel professionally, or enjoy an activity without struggling at it?  If not, it may be the right time to put some energy towards polishing that skill.

That said, don’t limit yourself to only the things you’re currently excelling at.  Try new things.  Is this a skill that can advance you professionally?  Is this an activity you’d enjoy if you put the time in to build a foundation?  You’ll never know until you try – and you just may discover something else to add to your list of things you rock at!  As the saying goes, “Do what you love, love what you do!”
